Aged care workers set to receive 2 bonus payments of upto $400 each as funding announced.

Aged care staff will be able to access two bonus payments of up to $400 each under a $209 million package to be announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

It will be paid pro rata on the hours worked, with the first payment to be made in February and the second in May.

Those eligible include aged care workers in government subsidised home care and aged care workers providing direct care, food or cleaning services in government subsidised residential care.

Mr Morrison is expected to unveil the plan during his speech to the National Press Club on Tuesday.

“None of our health outcomes would be possible without the hard work, long hours and dedicated care offered by our frontline health and aged care workforce,” he will say.

“Their resilience over the past two years has been inspiring.”

The bonus payment builds on the $393 million provided over three payments to 234,000 aged care workers during the pandemic.

Massive slump in the polls

The cash splash comes as the Morrison government suffers a massive slump in new polling ahead of the federal election, triggering questions about a potential leadership challenge.

The latest Newspoll published in The Australian on Monday gave Labor a 56-44 two-party-preferred lead – five points higher than just before Malcolm Turnbull lost the leadership in August 2018.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told ABC radio on Monday he believed Mr Morrison would be the first prime minister since John Howard to serve a full term and go to an election.

“Australians know that he’s working hard every day to deliver the best health and economic outcome,” Mr Frydenberg said.
