KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has said that decision had to be taken on the US grant Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) through parliamentary procedures if consensus is lacking among the political parties.
Putting his suggestions before the leadership at the meeting of the Central Working Committee on Friday, Dr. Koirala said the MCC had to be given a logical conclusion through either all-party consensus or the parliamentary process, if consensus is lacking.
“MCC has been a keenly followed issue by the world community, putting the Nepali government, leaders and parliament at the center. If we fail to give it an outlet, questions would be raised against the competence of the government, leaders and system,” he said.
He viewed that politics was done on a pure grant and transformed it into something else. “Diplomatic expertise and our leadership capability have attached with moving forward MCC project.”
Koirala also advised NC President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to run to party in line with rules and regulations and strength it in view of coming local level elections. He also conveyed that he along with other party leaders and cadres were in favor of NC contesting the elections on its own.
“Instead of forging alliances that are against political principles, we should strengthen the party. For that, the leadership should lead without prejudice and in accordance to rules and regulations. Various nominations in different bodies should also be just and for the good of the party.”
He also suggested concluding the halted district conventions by February 21 in view of the local elections slated for May 13. “Let us not suspend any bylaws of the party statute, begin distribution of new active memberships, resolve old membership dispute and strengthen the party forward.”
